En este torneo, que intentaba reverdecer viejos laureles del ajedrez alemán, se intentó contar con los maestros más fuertes del mundo. Sin embargo, Emanuel Lasker y José Raúl Capablanca se desmarcaron pidiendo unos altos emolumentos que fueron rechazados. Geza Maroczy y Milan Vidmar declinaron participar por compromisos laborales. El organizador del torneo, y también participante, fue Siegbert Tarrasch.
